Day Thirty One and the FINAL challenge of my ‘31 Days of Discomfort’…
Sitting myself down with blank sheets of paper and pens with the task to start drafting ideas for the second issue of Anxiety.AND? 😁 🎉
The first was Anxiety.AND? Self-Esteem and the second will be Anxiety.AND? Discomfort …there, I’ve committed!
This issue will explore my thoughts about how doing uncomfortable things tells the brain we’re safe and therefore helps to reduces anxiety.
I’ll also look at the things we do that feel comfortable and familiar (not necessarily in a nice way) and tell the brain we’re unsafe so we can get a better picture of how we might be our own worst enemy 🤦‍♀️

Unfortunately anxiety, pain, suffering, change, sadness and grief amongst many other uncomfortable feelings are totally unavoidable…so I want to help myself and others learn how to build the resilience and self-esteem to cope with these aspects of life.

I didn’t feel it was appropriate to associate todays discomfort with the daily challenge but still wanted to share…
I have an afternoon of comfort and #selfcare ahead after saying farewell to a person that I befriended four years ago with #AgeUK
Our weekly cups of tea and chats meant a lot to both of us. I enjoyed our conversations about nature, politics, food, art, gardening, animals (particularly my chickens and hedgehogs in the garden), the environment and felt a big sense of purpose in making someone else’s day a bit more interesting than their usual routine.

Day Twenty Nine of my ‘31 Days of Discomfort’ Challenge and I tackled the compost heap, flattening it out and covering it with carpet for the winter. It’ll make some excellent food for our veggies next year 🥕💕
It’s quite an uncomfortable job, lots of flies, ants, worms and wood lice writhing around in there and some trying to crawl on me! 🐛
I think I spent most of the time doing this job with a disgusted look on my face and batting away flies from my face 😂 I’m sure they’re having a whale of a time, in their own little edible wonderland of rotting apples, chicken poo and grass clippings! 💩

It was one of those days where I managed to fit everything in with minutes to spare and no time to do anything intentionally uncomfortable until I found myself writing up notes in the dark on my iPad in the car before going to see some friends this evening to carve some pumpkins 🎃😂
I always try to do my notes on the day because otherwise I hold everything in my mind. It’s an important process to let go of the day and not cross work over into my wind down time. So I guess, again, sticking to my own boundaries means being a little uncomfortable!

Day Twenty Seven of my ‘31 Days of Discomfort’ Challenge 🌳🍃✂️ 🌹
It was time to give the #figtree and #roses a brutal haircut!
Quite a lot of physical discomfort involved with this one as the rose thorns are chunky and the fig sap is really irritating for your skin so gloves are essential! Also some mental discomfort; nature slowing down and leaves continuing to fall means winter is on the way, the clocks have gone back and it’s going to get darker and darker…but, this process gives me a chance to reflect on the the cyclical nature of everything, cutting these back means they’ll come back strong and full of colour and fruit in the spring and summer. It’s important for me to find ways of embracing every season in the natural world as I find this makes it easier to deal with other kinds of changes.
Change is uncomfortable but unavoidable 💕

Day Twenty Four of my ‘31 Days of Discomfort’ challenge…I needed to get some food from the local shop (about a two minute walk away) but decided to walk in the opposite direction and take the unnecessarily long route as I had a bit of time before my evening clients. I always have a little ceremonial burn for each one that I fill up. I know some people keep theirs to look back on but for me it’s a cathartic and challenging process of letting go…my journal is a space to acknowledge and process all of my emotions, the whole rainbow! I tend to write in it more when I’m dealing with particularly uncomfortable feelings, so when it comes to burning it I acknowledge the role that it played in helping me to navigate all aspects of life throughout the past year. I see this ritual as a chance to reflect on what I want to leave behind and which lessons I’ll take with me into the next chapter.

Being so busy with client work often means that I have loads of creative ideas buzzing around my brain but find it really difficult to sit down and do them. This book great because it helps you get over that initial block by giving you a prompt and because you are drawing or painting directly onto the pages you have to get used to the idea of things not being ‘perfect’. Once I’m through the uncomfortable feelings, I really enjoy it and I think this will be a good warm up for when I want to do my own illustrations 💕

I’ve been going to PT sessions for nearly a year now but have only ever used the gym by myself TWICE 😂 🤦‍♀️
I don’t feel nervous about using the machines or weights anymore, I don’t feel uncomfortable exercising in front of other people…so I think it’s something about not feeling prepared and having to make it up as I go along. I realise an easy fix for this would be to have a plan…which is what I did today. So now I know that it’s just this little step that’s stopping me (or more likely that I’m using as an excuse) I guess I can do something about it and actually use the gym membership I’ve paid for 😆

Apart from the discomfort of having such a full belly from a delicious pub lunch after a little walk around #Hursley it’s been a pretty comfortable day for me…so I sat outside watching the rain for a little while. Not the most uncomfortable option but not as warm and cosy as sitting inside. Hope you enjoy the sounds of the drips coming off the roof into our pond 💦
